High quality for a long life

Compared to other consumer goods, glasses are quite sustainable products in and of themselves, as they can be used for years and years. The high quality of our frames is therefore possibly the greatest factor that reduces their impact on the environment, as it makes them particularly durable. Our repairs services help make life cycles even longer, as even the most eco-friendly glasses aren’t much good if they break after one year, cannot be repaired and thus have to be thrown away.

Transparent sustainability: Our certification under ISCC PLUS

Eschenbach Optik has been certified under ISCC PLUS – a major step on our journey towards an even more sustainable future! The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) is the first fully recognised certification scheme for sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions savings. Certification under ISCC PLUS covers all kinds of agricultural and forestry raw materials, agricultural waste and processing residues.

In cooperation with the Eastman Chemical Company – the leading provider of raw materials in the eyewear industry for almost a century – we will be using Eastman Acetate Renew, a sustainable and unique material, to manufacture selected frames of certain brands in future.

Frame for frame towards the future

For many people, maintaining an eco-friendly lifestyle is a major concern. Selected highlight models and the related takedown models from brands that include HUMPHREY’S eyewear, BRENDEL eyewear, MINI EYEWEAR and Marc O’Polo Eyewear now allow our customers to combine their sense of style and their desire for responsible consumption with a fashion-forward twist – all thanks to Eastman Acetate Renew.

Eastman Acetate Renew marries renewable cellulose from certified cultivation with proven recycled plastics to create new, high-quality acetate – guaranteeing the look and feel our customers have become accustomed to while at the same time meeting our high standards. Putting us all on a green path towards a recycling economy, model by model.

How does it work?

The trees come from sustainably managed forests and plantations and are processed to cellulose. At the same time, plastic waste is not disposed of in landfills but is instead broken down into its individual components using EASTMAN CARBON RENEWAL TECHNOLOGY. The resulting molecular components then become the raw material used to manufacture this high-quality acetate.

Increasing the sustainability of our cases

Since early May 2022, we have gradually been replacing our cases with more sustainable new models. We use different materials, depending on the brand: post-consumer or pre-consumer recycled polyester, which means recycled consumer or production waste; wood, a natural, renewable commodity; as well as paper and cardboard. And we’ve made another change: for several brands, we have opted for foldable cases that take up less space on their journey to our customers.

More sustainable polybags

Our new polybags, which we use for frames, sunglasses and cases and as protective coverings for temples, are made out of approx. 60% production waste and approx. 40% new materials. They are recyclable and save around 1,800 kg of new plastic per year.

Even fewer carbon emissions

Our next step this year is to assess the carbon footprint of each and every one of our frames to improve our understanding of how we can reduce our carbon emissions even further, and most effectively.
